Do Your Own Mold Removal — If You Dare

mold on ceiling and wallsAccording to United States Environmental Protection Agency, you may be able to do you own mold cleanup if the area impacted by the mold is less than 10 square feet. If you aren’t sure how much of your home is impacted by mold or you don’t feel competent to do a thorough and complete job, then it’s best to leave this complex task to mold remediation experts.

Which choice you make for small jobs is up to you. But for larger job, your home’s structure and your family’s health are too important to try to do the job yourself.

If you decide to do the work yourself, however, be sure to go by the following guidelines from the EPA:

Follow the rules. The EPA publishes specifications for how mold remediation should be done in schools and commercial buildings, and it makes sense to follow similar rules and specifications when working on any kind of building. In addition, guidelines are published by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists and other governmental and professional organizations.

Think about the HVAC system. If you have a mold problem, there’s a good chance that the HVAC system may be contaminated as well. The EPA publishes guidelines about when air duct cleaning is a good idea, but it’s absolutely necessary if you suspect contamination. Stop running the system until you’re sure the system is clear or it has been cleaned. Running it could make the problem worse by spreading the mold within the building.

Think about other kinds of contamination. If your mold or water damage is caused contaminated water — like that from a sewer, for example — the job may be beyond what you can tackle on your own. You need to call on a professional mold remediation company because you need special experience in getting rid of other contaminants and fixing damage to the building’s structure caused by other contaminants. Never just assume there isn’t a problem because there’s no smell or discoloration. Not all kinds of materials leave telltale signs.

Consider your health. If you’re susceptible to health problems or have allergies to mold, you need to leave the cleanup of even small patches of mold to professionals. And you should think about being out of the building while cleanup is happening. There’s no reason to risk your health doing a job that others have the equipment and expertise to do better and without impacting anyone’s health negatively.

And remember that if you have a mold problems, nothing is more important than acting quickly. Damage from mold can grow and spread quickly — within a matter of a day or two. The longer it remains untreated, the worse the problem will be and the more expensive and time-consuming the repairs will be.

At Orange Restoration, we’re prepared to take on mold remediation projects of any size. Just ask us what we can do for you to restore comfort, safety and functionality to your home or business. We handle projects large and small for clients of all kinds every day. So what can we do for you today? Call (619) 376-6838.

Warehouse Fire Evacuees Now Have Place To Stay

lin wood fireA warehouse fire that occurred in North Brunswick became so dangerous that it became imperative for those that lived in the surrounding areas to evacuate their homes. There were concerns that the fire could easily spread to domestic properties, and so the decision was made that it was much safer for those people to be removed from the area completely. However, there was concern as to exactly where those residents would be able to go. Thankfully the Red Cross charity has now opened up a Reception Center that has been purposefully created in order to accept those evacuees, and care for them until it is possible for them to return to their homes.

The Reception Center is located at the Linwood Middle School, which can be found at 25 Linwood Place, North Brunswick. It is unclear exactly how many people were forced to grab their most treasured belongings and leave their homes due to the warehouse fire, but at least 75 people have gone to the Red Cross’ Reception Center in order to be looked after and cared for. There are five members of Red Cross staff there who are ensuring that those who are currently homeless are warm, comfortable, well fed, and safe.

As the warehouse fire continues to be fought by local firefighters, those who have been evacuated are being kept continuously informed of their progress, and it is hoped that it will not be too long before they will be able to return back to their homes in safety. However, in the event that they will not be able to return to their homes for a few days, the Red Cross is already putting some plans into motion to make sure that they can sleep comfortably at the Reception Center.

Ohio Flash Floods Kill Half of Family

Brown County flash floodThe flash floods that have torn through Ripley, Brown County, Ohio have been devastating, and now the news has been released of the deaths of three people. A woman and two of her children were in their mobile home when the Redoak Creek nearby burst its banks and flooded the area, and they were killed. The mobile home itself was pulled from its foundations, and pulled across the flood waters, and there was nothing that anyone could do.

Rescue teams were mobilized to the area as soon as the emergency was realized, and they were able to save the father and two more of their children – but by that point it was too late to save half of their family. The survivors were taken to hospital so that their injuries could be seen to, and the rescue teams have staying in the area to ensure that no one else is missing or hurt. It has been reported that one of the children who died was only five years old, and that the mother was pregnant with their fifth child.Reports do not seem to agree on the exact age of the second child that was killed, but the three surviving members of that family will now have to start processing the fact that their numbers have been halved overnight.

This tragedy is something that the mobile home community in Ripley are going to struggle to come to terms with. It almost seems impossible that a family could be torn apart like that in just one night, and yet the flooding was so strong that it is a miracle that more people were not hurt or killed. There are many rescue services that will be offering support and care to those in Ripley; both material, as there are many who are now without adequate shelter and food, and emotional, as a great hurt has been caused in the community. It may be necessary for some of the children who knew the victims of the flooding disaster to receive special care and attention, and potentially even counselling.

The flooding in this area is due to the fact that torrential rain fell; over four inches in as many hours. A severe weather warning was given by the Local Nation Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio, but there was nothing that the family could do to predict the bursting of the Redoak Creek banks. Severe flooding like this was experienced in Eastern Kentucky recently, and caused the deaths of at least four people in a similar mobile home community. There are still several individuals from that community who are still listed as missing, although the hope that they will be found alive is diminishing with each day that they are not accounted for.

Flash floods of this nature can be absolutely deadly for those that live in mobile homes, and many people are now being warned about any future downpours that are expecting. Experts have stated that the mobile home communities were not adequately prepared for any sort of disaster such as flooding, due to poor construction. There is evidence of bad foundations, poorly installed tie-downs, and very think construction. In combination, these factors mean that a strong flood could easily wash away a mobile home, causing a home amount of damage to the property and to its residents.

It is hoped by many that this tragedy will galvanize local authorities to demand better protection and care for those who are living in mobile homes, as well as to take responsibility for the flood cleanup and property restoration, to prevent anything like this from happening ever again.

Flooding in Kentucky Becomes State of Emergency

Johnson KY floodingThe situation in Kentucky is growing more and more serious, as the flooding that has destroyed so many people’s homes and caused so much chaos is now responsible for the death of at least three people. Several others are missing, and it is not known exactly what can be done to retrieve them. Rescue teams are continuing their searches in the areas where the missing people are believed to be, but at this point there is no more news on whether or not they have been found.

The extreme flooding was caused by several storms that hit one after another, leaving the ground no time to soak up the excess water. When that was combined with torrential rainfall between Monday 13 July and Tuesday 14 July, it very quickly became clear that flooding in the Eastern Kentucky region was inevitable – but few could have predicated that the consequences of that flooding was going to be so dangerous and so deadly.

As reports started to come in from the Johnson and Rowan counties in Kentucky, the numbers of homes that had been damaged by the flooding started to creep up, until the reports stated that at the very least 150 homes in Johnson County had been damaged badly, and more or less than 60 homes in Rowan County had experienced similar problems. Many homes have been completely destroyed, while others are damaged to the point where those who live there cannot remain there safely.

But the tragedy only continued when a fatality was reported from Johnson County. The man was attempting to travel through the flood in his car, but when his car stalled he did not remain in the relative safety of his car. Instead, he opened up the door and was swept away by the rising water. His body was found on Monday 13 July. The second fatality was reported on Tuesday 14 July, and was a woman who had been crushed by debris from mobile homes that had been washed away by the flood waters. Another body was found in the same location two days later, during part of the clear up operation.

These are terrible things to report, but there are still many people who are worried for the six other people who have been reported missing during the flooding and have not been found. Thankfully due to the local rescue services, there have been fifty people who could have been fatalities but were rescued just in time. Many minor injuries have been reported across both Johnson and Rowan Counties, and there are still currently around 19,000 people who have lost power to their homes.

Many different organizations have mobilized their people to Eastern Kentucky in order to support local services in the search and rescue and clean-up operations. These include the Kentucky National Guard, the Red Cross (donate here), and KYEM. Support has come in other ways as well, through the provision of food and shelter for those who have been made homeless by the storms, or who still have no means of cooking food for themselves due to the lack of power.

The situation in Eastern Kentucky is so serious that Governor Steve Beshear has declared a state of emergency. This will permit the local officials to use state resources in order to help protect and serve the people of Johnson County and Rowan County. It was only four months ago that a state of emergency was declared in Kentucky, and that situation in April was also due to extreme flooding. Sadly there are even more extreme weather warnings for Kentucky, and so the fight against the rainfall and the flooding is not over yet.

Disaster Assistance Resource Center Opens In Kankakee

Kankakee floodsThe storms and flooding that has affected those living in the area of Kankakee will now have an excellent resource to go to, now that the Red Cross has collaborated with other disaster relief organizations to open up a Disaster Assistance Resource Center. Many different groups have come together in order to ensure that residents have access to the best possible care and support, including representatives from local government, from different faiths, and from different non-profit organizations.

Few were truly prepared for the extent of the damage that was caused by the flooding and the storms, and so there are many who will directly benefit from the different areas of support which can now be reached from the Center. Over 10,000 meals have already been distributed to those who are unable to cook their own, and many have used the emergency shelter that the Red Cross put up for those whose homes had been so badly destroyed that it was not safe or healthy for them to stay there.

It will be open from 8 am right through until 6 pm, and those manning it will be able to support those who have suffered water damage, loss of electricity, and trouble with other areas. There will also be Red Cross caseworkers in attendance, who have been specifically trained to talk families through their different options, and plan a way for them to think long-term once again.
For those that wish to go to the Disaster Assistance Resource Center, all you will need to do is take with you any form of identification that proves that you are a resident of the area. There will be no charges for the help and support that is offered. Those who go may also be supported with items such as rakes, shovels, and trash bags so that the clean-up operation can continue.

The Health Benefits of Using Green Cleaning Supplies

green_cleaning_productsThere are countless benefits to using green cleaning products. Over the years, eco-friendly cleaning supplies have significantly evolved and grown so much so that for every chemical product, there’s a green counterpart available. Some people assume that the only benefit of using a green cleaning product is that it uses fewer ingredients or less artificial ingredients. However, that’s not the case. Take a look at just a few of the benefits of going green with your cleaning supplies:

Baby and Child-Friendly

Babies and children have a habit of licking surfaces and putting things in their mouth. When you have a small child, you’re likely cleaning your house much more often. However, if you use toxic products, your child is ingesting those chemicals. By using a green product, your child or baby won’t ingest any toxins or artificial ingredients.

Healthy Bodies

Did you know that frequently using cleaning spray increases the risk of developing asthma? Or that your skin can absorb chemicals from cleaning sprays? Cleaning sprays are known to linger in the air long after they’ve been sprayed. By using green cleaning supplies, you can avoid chemicals from sitting on your skin and finding their way into your lungs.

Cleaner Environment

When you use cleaning supplies—even non-spray products—chemicals and toxins are released into the air. This hurts both the environment and your home’s air. By using green products, you can reduce pollution, diminish your impact on ozone depletion, and minimize your impact on global climate change. Additionally, since many green products use recyclable packing, you can minimize waste.

Standard cleaning products pose several risks and aren’t safe to use. It’s common for someone to accidentally get product into the skin or eyes, which can cause chemical burns. Eco-friendly supplies, on the other hand, are required by law to meet specific standards regarding toxicity levels.

Wait; don’t you want to use antibacterials? Don’t they get rid of bacteria that cause illnesses? Recent studies have shown that antibacterial ingredients aren’t necessary in soap, as soap itself cleans. Additionally, using antibacterial products too often can actually cause your body to build a bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Triclosan, a commonly used antibacterial agent, can even hurt your thyroid and hormonal system. Antibacterial ingredients are often found in standard cleaning supplies, but aren’t present in green products.

Residential Water Damage

water-damage-restoration-1The First Things to Do When You Experience Residential Water Damage

A water pipe burst, your toilet overflowed, or some other disaster happened causing your home severe water damage. Residential water damage is a nightmare but you can wake up from it and get your house back to its dry self. If you’ve just experienced a flood or other water disaster, here are the first steps you should immediately take:

1. Turn off your water.
Shut off the main water line for your house and find out the source of the water. It doesn’t matter if a pipe burst in the kitchen or the bathroom, the only way to stop water from flowing is to turn off all the water to your house.

2. Turn off electricity and gas.
Water and electricity don’t mix. To avoid more disasters, turn off the electricity and gas from the main source. Make sure you’re not standing in water when turning off the electricity. If you can’t avoid this, call an electrician.

3. Find your most valuable items.
Locate your most important items, especially paper items like passports and checkbooks and make sure they’re safe from any water contact.

4. Call your insurance and take photos.
Before you move or clean up anything, take photos for your insurance claim and don’t throw anything away until the adjustor has investigated.

5. Assess the damage.
If there is any standing water, wipe it up and remove it. Move any furniture in the area, as well as breakables or small items that can be temporarily stored elsewhere. If the carpeting is wet, don’t immediately turn on fans or a heater until you know if any of the water contains sewage. If it does, fans can spread contamination.

6. Call a professional.
Once you have extracted as much water as you can, call a professional who deals with water damage restoration. A trained San Diego water damage professional can best determine what caused the problem, how to fix it, and how to repair any damages.
