Who decides if my home is safe?
We know that it can be very upsetting to go through a fire, and the last thing that you want to do is to become embroiled in more paperwork, but for your safety and the safety of the people around you, we would always recommend that you ask a professional to conduct a full structural survey, so that you can be completely 100% sure that your property is safe to inhabit again. If they decide that the property is not safe, then you will need to ensure that all of their recommendations are fulfilled to the letter so that you can live in confidence once more. Even if a property looks completely safe, it could actually be very weak, and that is why you should conduct this check yourself.

How can I keep my property secure if we cannot be in it?
Many people will be concerned, naturally, that due to fire damage and water damage your property will no longer be secure, with doors and windows that can no longer be kept shut and locked. When you combine this with the fact that you may not be able to stay at the property, many people will worry about the safety of their property and their possessions. That is why we can offer a boarding up service that will transfer the power of entry back to you, so that you can either stay there in safety, or stay elsewhere with the knowledge that your property is secure.

Can’t I sort out the fire and smoke damage myself?
The trouble with fire and smoke damage is that it can very easily get worse and worse, especially when either left to its own devices, or if you try to use the wrong sorts of tools and techniques. That is why we would always recommend that you bring in certified and fully trained professionals, so that you do not have to compromise on the quality and finish of your home. This will of course depend slightly on any experience that you have yourself, and the exact extent of the damage in your property.

I think I’m going to wait to carry out the fire damage restoration – is that a good idea?
Definitely not. The damage that fire has on a property will only increase and get worse as time goes on, especially as ash from a fire is very acidic. Leaving it in your home without having a professional clean up and fire damage restoration process means that the ash can continue to damage your home, increasing the amount of work that needs doing, and in turn the bill that you will need to pay. Few people realise that ash is so corrosive that it can permanently etch into glass just by being left on your windows for a few days, and the longer that it is left in your property, the worse that it is going to get. A few weeks of ash being left to its own devices means that it can actually start to corrode metal, which is something that very few people realise. But even worse than that, ash is very dangerous for people if they breath it in, and can lead to lung problems later on in life if you continue to live around it. In severe cases, this can lead to asthma problems or even heart attacks.

We had a fire, but there seems to be more water damage than fire damage?!
This is a common problem with fire damage; after all, a huge amount of water will have been used in order to prevent the fire from spreading and not only damaging more of your property, but other properties around you and in the surrounding area. That is why professional fire damage restorers, such as ourselves, will not only be fully trained in restoring items from fire damage, but also water damage. It may be necessary for your home to be professionally dried out by a contractor so that the negative effects of so much water – such as rot and mold – do not occur.

What is the difference between cleaning up and reconstruction, and what can you help with?
The good news is that we can help with both cleaning up the initial damage that your property has suffered through the fire and smoke present there, and with reconstructing your property so that it can be returned to the standard that you had before the fire itself. Put very simply, the clean up process is the one that removes anything that is completely damaged, and is completely beyond repair. It also includes removing any marks or stains that the fire and the smoke have caused. However, this process becomes reconstruction when we start to build new things, such as fixing up walls by filling them in, and replacing fixtures and fittings that were destroyed by the fire. In many ways, the clean up process allows your property to be usable again, while the reconstruction process allows your property to return to the wonderful state that it was in before the fire.

There’s a horrible smell in my home after the fire, will you be able to remove that too?
The smell associated with fire and smoke really is unpleasant, and for many people can be an unfortunate reminder of the horrific event that took place. That is why we pride ourselves on being able to remove the smell and other odors from your property, so that no one would be able to know just by being within it that you had suffered a fire.

What sort of household furniture are you able to reconstruct and restore?
Sadly, this changes in many cases depending on the type of fire, the temperatures it reached, how long it continued for, and how quickly the clean up process was begun. However, there are very large numbers of items that we will be able to help you with. For a start, there are many different kinds of techniques that will allow us to restore things such as photographs, videos, and other important items that can hold a huge amount of memories for people. The one thing that we do not do, on the other hand, is make promises. Because every situation is very different, we do not want to get your hopes up, so we would always recommend that you get in touch with us so that we can make an accurate assessment of your property and belongings.

Surely every fire is the same?
It may be hard to believe, but every single fire is different. It will start in different circumstances, progress in a different way, consume different items, heat up to different temperatures, and leave different residues. This means that every single clean up process and all fire damage restoration process will be completely different, although they will have many things in common. If you have experienced a fire, the only way that you will be able to tell how long it will take for your property to be returned to the state that it was before the fire is by getting a professional into your property to completely assess the consequences of the fire.

How does this work with our insurers?
Much like every fire is different, every insurance company is a little different. That is why it is essential that you contact them at the earliest convenience to update them with what has happened, so that they can start to take measures to support you through this difficult time. By working with your insurance company, we can try to get you and your property happy and whole once more as soon as possible.

We’ve found someone else, and they are a lot cheaper?!
That’s great! What we would always ask is that you ensure that anyone who works with you on your home has the full certification that proves that they have been adequately trained to deal with your home and fire damage restoration. Engaging the services who does not have the correct certification means that you could only be increasing the amount of work that needs doing, and making the job even harder for a fully trained professional to carry out. A huge amount of technical expertise and knowledge comes into play when a person is making your property safe, and bringing it back to the standard that you want. Finding someone who is very cheap is great, but only if you are going to be just as happy with the work after everything is done.
