What you need to know about Asbestos Abatement

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

In buildings and structures built before 1980, during renovation, remodeling,  or natural disasters, asbestos is often discovered. Asbestos can be any of several minerals that separate into long, threadlike fibers. There are certain varieties that do not burn and do not conduct heat or electricity and have been used for making fireproof materials such as electrical insulation, roofing, and filters. Asbestos abatement is the removal of such materials.

Homeowners are not required to remove it, however, the presence of asbestos may create a hazard if exposed, and asbestos abatement or removal can be necessary to eliminate this danger. Under California law, a homeowner is required to disclose the presence of asbestos in writing prior to the sale of the house. Commercial property owners are required to secure asbestos abatement where exposed and/or poses a hazard.
